Although at a glance Brunei pitches the image of a quiet outdoorsy nightlife, if you know where to look, you’ll notice lively communities of people gathered together to have a good night’s game. One such place is at No.18, 1st Floor, Bangunan Desa Delima, Kg Serusop, a place called Wild Magic.

The name “Wild Magic” is quite interesting. Adapted perhaps from the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, it provides a place for the DnD community in Brunei to gather 2 to 3 times a week to journey and fight battles planned for the night together. But maybe “Wild Magic” could also be reflective of the human mind, the power of the imagination, an untapped wild potential that has been waiting to be unleashed. And at Wild Magic, you can let your imagination run free.

Some of you might be familiar with DnD through Netflix’s famous sci-fi horror “Stranger Things”. Minus the accompanying dark, ominous, and tense Netflix’s series storyline, Wild Magic and its Dungeon Masters (DM) offer a much safer and enjoyable game.

A Tabletop RPG game, Dungeons & Dragons (DnD) allows you to play to your fantasy; you can be the swashbuckling Half-Elf, or the Dragonborn Warlock with spells at hand ready to defeat your adversaries. Opened earlier this year in March 2019, Yazin, the owner of Wild Magic, shared the history of the store, “Wild Magic started as a need for the community to find a place where they can sit down, relax in peace, and play Dungeons & Dragons and other Role-Playing Games (RPGs) in general.”

According to Yazin, the place arose from the need of it, “People have been playing DnD in Brunei for quite a long time, but quietly, closeted”. With a proper place to host such a community, Wild Magic hopes to create a place where players of DnD can play the game as it should be played with ease.

Traditionally, DnD is played campaign style which, as Yazin explained, is the type of game you play over a long period of time. However, Wild Magic offers several other DnD gameplays. For those who prefer a short or one-time game, they can join their Wednesday Wanshots. The most casual type of gameplay, the game is also live-streamed on Twitch. The third gameplay is called Adventurer’s League (AL) which are official campaigns from the makers of DnD mainly hosted on weekends. “You can drop in any time and play, just take your character and level up, then come again another time.”

The game varies, but to start a game you’ll need a character (you are welcome to create your own) and several dice sets. The DM will provide the storyline and all you have to do is let your imagination loose once the game starts. Typically played between 4 to 6 players, DnD is an interactive game, where players are constantly interacting with one another and the DM, actively responding to the scenes set for them.

Although the store has only been open for about 9 months, they have received good responses from the public. While DnD is their feature game, they also host other RPGs like Warhammer; have a spot for 3D printing and painting of figurines and game sets; sell figurine paints as well as dice sets among other things.

Wild Magic is as Yazin referred to it, a “do-it-all DnD store”. “Our main business is to host DnD games, but we also sell dice, miniatures, and we also want to help people cultivate their DnD hobby like being able to paint miniatures and learn how to build environments or write stories, or for people who just wants to start playing.”

When we asked what was it about DnD that pulls people in, he answered with, “The biggest thing about DnD is that you get to create your own stories with your friends, you can be who you want, do anything you want, and play the story the way you want it to be. But there’s so much more benefit to DnD; we’re talking about social skills, team-building skills, critical thinking because you’re thinking on your feet all the time, and the power of the imagination. Sometimes you want to be able to build on your imagination and there’s just no telling where you would go when you let your imagination run wild.” As the Dungeon Master’s favourite phrase goes, “What would you like to do?”
