Ramesh J Bhawnani, the Chairman of Galleria YMRM started off as a Sales Assistant who sold carpets, which is where he learned his negotiation skills and managed to do a lot of networking. This allowed him to confidently set up his own business, initially selling watches and electronics in 1986.

He slowly started to gain momentum, and after a change in business trends, he diversified his business and added home decorations with the opening of the first YMRM branch in Serusop back in 2000.

With the opening of their own premises at Tungku Link, YMRM had decided to delve into the textile industry in 2005. The business soon sprouted with the establishment of its branches in Batu Satu and Tanjung Bunut, totalling up to four branches at the moment.

By the end of the month, YMRM will be looking at the grand opening of their latest branch located in Sengkurong. The new branch will be managed by his son, who is also the Managing Director of YMRM, Hitesh R Bhawnani.

Hitesh explains that the new branch will have a welcoming feel, unlike the regular textile shops that can be found in the country – packed with amenities that aim to make customers feel more comfortable whilst shopping. The strategic location will allow open up a new catchment area for the business that may spread towards the residents of Tutong District.

“The remarkable atmosphere aims to help customers relax, with the existence of massage chairs and a lounge. This is the next level in making luxury textile shopping more affordable,” said Hitesh.

Compared to other branches, Galleria YMRM in Sengkurong will act as a flagship store for the brand, and the contemporary and modern design will offer a more personalised shopping experience for both men and women to shop.

Hitesh revealed the possibility of branching out to other districts such Belait and Tutong, depending on whether the market demand is high. He also disclosed his future plans to create a one-stop centre that will operate for 24 hours in the country.

“I hope to be able to create a one-stop 24-hour centre, where people can come and get everything you want under one roof. We are looking to transform Brunei into a shopping hub,” he said.

WIth the upcoming branch, YMRM will continue to be one of the biggest textile stores in the country.
