The theme for this year Islamic New Year celebration is “Ilmu dan Amal, Nadi Wawasan Negara”, roughly translate to the vision of the state includes the concept of knowledge and good deeds.

We can assume that Wawasan Negara relates to Brunei Wawasan 2035, where the country will hope to achieve:

  • Well educated and highly-skilled people as measured by the highest international standard;
  • Quality of life that is among the top 10 nations in the world
  • Dynamic and sustainable economy with income per capita within the top countries in the world.

To achieve this, people of Brunei must have knowledge and consistently do good deeds, these two factors are interchangeable because we can’t do any good deeds without any knowledge of the action.

“And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart – about all those [one] will be questioned.” [17:36]

The above passage from the Quran proved that knowledge is based from our own actions. This means without knowledge, we cannot do any actions.

So in the context of Wawasan 2035, the reason that knowledge and doing good deeds was mentioned as part of the country vision is that if we do not have any education, we can’t achieve any of the three main objectives.

First, to have a well-educated and highly-skilled people, we must learn and use the knowledge we gained to have better skills for the country own purpose.

The second part is on the improvement of quality of life will only come when people starts to create a better understanding within one another, this is why doing good deeds is important as the concept of Melayu Islam Beraja (M.I.B) values good manners as it is important in Islam.

Lastly, after having knowledge and constantly doing good deeds, developing a dynamic and sustainable economy will be able as we can use the knowledge to create better industries thus contributing to better economies.

So with knowledge and  good deeds, achieving Wawasan 2035 is not impossible as it maintain the concept of M.I.B and also will lead to a better economy for the country.
