The annual mini “Gerai Perayaan” (celebration stalls) in-conjunction with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s birthday is back this year across the Sultanate.
This year, the Sutera team went to the stalls at the Lapau parking lot in Bandar Seri Begawan – where the stalls made its ways to the side roads of Taman Sir Omar Ali Saifuddien III. With more than 80 stalls selling items ranging from clothings to food, there are definitely a lot to choose from as well as to indulge the ambiance of the festival.
These items and events are the crucial factors that makes the fair unique in it’s own way should one compare to the other festivals in Brunei – such as the ‘Gerai Ramadhan’ during the Holy Month of Ramadhan
1) Stage performances
Throughout the four districts, there will be special performances by the locals to liven up the festivities. Each night will see a different types of stage performances from the many villages in the district. The performances ranging from singing performances to culture performances – widely known as ‘memukun’.
2) Lights and Balloon
The festival is not complete without the array of colourful festivals lights and balloons decorated throughout the nation – creating a unique atmosphere that can only be experienced during His Majesty’s Birthday festivities.
Brunei is very well-known for its inexpensive food and cuisine. During the mini festivals, there are various stalls selling unique food such as ‘sotong tutuk’ and cotton candy normally only available during the festivals.
These are just some of the things you can do to fulfill your HM’s birthday experiences. The celebration often lasts for two-three weeks at the start of His Majesty’s birthday, on the 15th of July. Make your way down to experience one of the most highly-anticipated events in Brunei.
