About 500 gamers had gathered to sign up for the long-awaited Brunei E-Sport Tournament (BEST) 2017 at Indah Hall, Royal Brunei Recreational Club, which was held on the 23rd to 24th December 2017.

In conjunction with the Brunei December Festival, Game On Business Management and Services organized one of the biggest gaming tournaments in Brunei, drawing over 1000 viewers to spectate who would be battling it out for the games titles of Fifa 18, League of Legends (LoL), Tekken 7, Gran Turismo Sport (GT Sport), Super Smash Bros, Vainglory and Mobile Legends.

On the first day, a qualifying competition was held to determine the finalists that would be competing on the final day of BEST 2017. These gamers looked exceptionally enthusiastic as they arrived extra early to test out their skills with other players at a dimly-lit venue to emulate a real cyber cafe, which is a place commonly associated by the gaming communities.

The highlight of the first day was the exhibition match between the all-female CSGO team of UNIKATS against 3 teams, in which one group was chosen at random from the public, the CSGO All-Star team members, and finally, a team that comprised members from Game On. The UNIKATS had proven their impressive capability by coming first in all three games.

The event was graced by the presence of the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Communications, Awang Haji Azhar bin Haji Ahmad, as the Guest of Honour to present the prizes to the respective winners. Md Ameruddin Shah Bin Kamaluddin won the Fifa 18 tournament against Ezam Sazri and brought home a brand new Playstation 4, while Hafizul Alif lost to Ivan Pang who received a $300 cash prize. Winning the Super Smash Bros, Wafi Ahmad walked off with a new Nintendo 2ds XL. Another finale was for CSGO, where the Goodfellas came out on top beating XDM, securing the tournament’s highest prize with a $600 cash and $400 worth of gaming peripherals.

On the other hand, Azwan Harun set the fastest record in GT Sport, winning himself a G29 racing controller. Team Paradox won against Team Sigma in the highly competitive final for League of Legends. As for the mobile game tournament, Team RV earned the title of Mobile Legends, and finally, Team Godfather was the victor in Vainglory.

During the two-day event, Game On also gave some members of the public an opportunity to win some prizes by answering random questions, so they would not go home empty-handed.

“We hope that this kind of tournament will be held on a yearly basis so that the E-Sport community can grow in Brunei” said Muhammad Azim Zailani, one of the Goodfellas gaming team member while talking about the growing potential of E-Sport tournament in Brunei.

The founder of Game On Business Management and Services, Amar Agus Din, during an interview with Sutera said “Apart from those exhausting days, I think it has been a successful event for Game On and with the support from the government, we can make the Brunei E-sport a huge event in the sultanate region”

Amar also added, “We have broken the record of 300 players participating in the event with around 500 joining and over 1000 visitors recorded during this E-sport event in Brunei and will hope to have future support from the Brunei Tourism for another bigger E-Sport tournament”

BEST 2017 had successfully hosted the first large-scale of E-Sport tournament in Brunei and we hope to see more gaming tournaments in this Sultanate region as it can help contribute to the potential growth of tourism in Brunei to the world.
